Policy Workshop- Towards a Circular Economy in Bangladesh’s Apparel Value Chains: The Context, Dynamics, Challenges, and Policy Gaps
On 13th February 2025, the CREATE project organized a workshop in Bangladesh, funded by DANIDA, on the transition to a circular economy in Bangladesh’s apparel industry and its links to Europe. A policy report on the Circular Economy transition in Bangladesh’s Apparel Value Chains was presented by Dr. Mohammad Bakhtiar Rana, Project Leader of the CREATE Project and Associate Professor of Aalborg University Business School, Denmark. Dr. Rana presented the research findings on:
✅ Mapping the apparel waste value chains.
✅ Institutional readiness to support circular economy transitions.
✅ The organizational environment and worker wellbeing across firms of all sizes.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders in Bangladesh, including UNIDO, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Dhaka University, National University Bangladesh, H&M, BESTSELLER, DBL Group, the Danish Embassy in Bangladesh, and many more. Their insights and feedback on our findings were invaluable.
Hosted by Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, the local coordinating partner, this workshop was a crucial step in fostering industry-wide collaboration for a more sustainable future.
The CREATE project’s mission is to drive meaningful change toward greater circularity, sustainability, and inclusive industrialization—ensuring that small and micro-enterprises, as well as workers, benefit from the sustainability transition in global extended fashion value chains.
